There's something magical about Fall. The air has that crispness to it, the leaves change colors, and the waves pick up a little bit from their summer lull. Next weekend to celebrate Fall we're having our Fall Sale and Swap at the showroom.

In addition to the great sales on wetsuits (new 3/2 anyone?), men's and women's clothing, slect new boards, and accessories, we're also going to be taking in used boards all next week leading up to the swap's kickoff next Saturday. Shortboards, longboards, SUPS- if you have it (and it's still rideable, no snap in halves!) we want it. You set the price, and when it sells, you'll receive 100% store credit which can be used towards anything in our shop! And as always, we never take a consignment fee. The more boards we have at the shop, the bigger and better the swap will be!

During the sale we will also be selling off our rental and lesson stock of Paddle Boards. They're all hand-shaped by Nature Shapes and are just a few months old. They're going to be sold at unbeatable prices, so definitely take advantage of this awesome deal if you've been interested in getting yourself a SUP, but haven't yet.

Natures Shapes goes to New England

Work never stops for Mike Becker, and this weekend he packed up his truck with over 20 boards and headed north to spread the Natures Shapes name all across New England. His first stop was at our friend Raf's store in Portland, Maine, SOPO SUP, which now proudly carries NS boards. (You can visit his website at www.soposup.com) He then headed down the coast visiting some awesome surf shops and got some fun waves at Point Judith, Rhode Island with his HP. A very successful trip for Natures Shapes.

Now Mike's back in the factory shaping tons of custom boards with Ed, Edgar, and Rebecca working hard to stock the showroom back up with some sick designs. Come stop by the shop, say hello, and check out our new boards and fall clothing! Quiksilver Pro Will Run

For all of you that have been anxiously awaiting the contest's arrival, our hopes may not be diminished. Hurricane Irene left a huge mess in Long Beach (and all over Long Island). If you watched the news, the boardwalk got hit pretty hard, there were lifeguard towers floating on the beach and an anchorwoman got swept away while reporting from right around the contest site.

As of now, the Quiksilver Pro looks to be on, the surfing part that is. You will have to keep checking about all the events and different concerts that were supposed to take place. Good Cause Fundraiser

Did you know that this year alone, 1 in every 110 children will be diagnosed with Autism? Or that even more will be diagnosed with an Autistic spectrum related disorder like Asperger syndrome? Those number's are higher than juvenile cancers, diabetes, AIDS and M.S. combined.

In our local area, Long Island, Autism cases are even more frequent. Which makes this a cause near and dear to our hearts. Every child is a special gift, and deserves the memories that make childhood so important. That's why we love our friends over at Surfer's Healing. They are an AWESOME non-for-profit organization that relies on the healing power of water and caring volunteers (mostly local surfer's!) to create great opportunities for children with autism and similar disorders to learn how to surf.

On Friday, September 9th, 2011 they will be holding a fundraiser in Long Beach at the Beach House. Come on down and donate to a great cause, and have a good time too! If you can't make it down, think about making a donation to their organization at http://www.surfershealing.org/index.html. Every little bit helps, even if you can't make a monetary donation, they need items like: children's wetsuits, surfboards, children's rash guards, life vests, beach permits, food and drinks.

For surfboard maker, it's a 'labor of love'

Check out Mike Becker and the Nature's Shapes team in the piece written in the newspaper Newsday this past Saturday. Here's a little excerpt from the article.

"While in the workshop, Becker can usually be found covered in a blanket of dust sanding down a board. The whole process, which takes about 2 to 3 weeks, is done by hand, as Becker and his small staff hand-shape the boards, then do the airbrushing, sanding and finishing. Becker likes to add his own touch to the boards, as well. Many of his paint designs hark back to styles popular in the '60s.

Boards are made and sold based on a person’s ability. Beginners' boards need to be bigger so they can learn how to surf, while experienced surfers can use smaller boards for more flexibility.

'He can make everything the way you want it made, and for what’s best for you,” said Harrison Miller, 18, who works in the Sayville store. “Mike just knows what works for Long Island, and he has surfed all around the world, so he knows what will work for you over there, too.' "

All of you have heard i'm sure about Daniel Bobis who is a dear friend of ours and to many people in the surfing community. Our deepest condolences go out to his family at this time. What a sick weekend it was in Montauk. Good surf, great company and even better surfers. Ditch was the spot and it was going off all weekend and into the week. Our team riders had a bunch of first place finishes, some second and thirds as well. Congrats to all.

Summer has been amazing, the weather and waves have made it unforgettable. We are enjoying all the boards that are coming out the factory. They are all unique and different and that's what we love. Some are more out there than others, maybe it's that full moon out tonight.... we don't care. Keep it coming, it's all good.

It doesn't take much to make people happy. A sunny day... summer... waves... cool people... That's what it was all about at Gilgo on Sunday. Nature's Shapes teamriders Jared Bono and Kim Romagnesi placed on top. And our own Mike Becker came in 2nd as a surprise addition to the competition. All in all a great day of sun and surfing... Congrats to all of the riders that day.

MADE ON LONG ISLAND

Think of all of the surf shops out there, tons right?? They're all over the area too. Not many take the time anymore to hand shape their boards, plus some outsource all of the work and components that go into making a board. All Nature's Shapes boards are hand made.

There is an assembly line that takes place and it is actually really cool if you think about all of the time and different elements that go into one board. Each person gets a hand in it and helps create each little masterpiece. So it's all made on Long Island. Hand-crafted. It's one of those nostalgic things that you never want to go away. Hopefully even with the cheap boards coming out left and right, nothing will ever take the place of the craft and art of making boards, because to be honest, it's amazing.

Check out one of the crew out in the water. This paddleboard was made in the factory and even her dog loves riding it. It seems like everyone enjoys summer as much as we do...

SUMMER SWAP

This weekend join us for our 2011 summer swap and blowout sale. Mike Becker and the Nature's Shapes team will be in the house and it's going to be a good time. Also, if you are bringing any used boards for the swap just make sure they are cleaned and they have value.

We have plenty of sick boards and customs coming out of the factory. Check out this baby surf board on the top left. They're not recommended for surfing, but make a great decoration or gift. The board underneath that is a collage that is going to be hung in an office (another good idea for your next custom). The one directly to the left is a baby SUP for a 2 year old girl's birthday. It's Mickey paddling into the sunset and is pretty amazing. We have so many talented artists at Nature's Shapes that i'm sure whatever you come up with, we can do.

The good ol days

The weekend was packed with summer heat, some good waves, barbeques & family get togethers. We hope everyone had a great Memorial Weekend and kickoff to what is going to be a sick summer. The Nature's Shapes family got together on Sunday and Mike gave us a tour of where it all began. In the top picture is one of the original Nature's Shapes logos and underneath is a picture of the little (and I mean little) shed where Mike used to make his first boards. It's crazy how far these guys have come, and how much we have to look forward to seeing in the future.

If any of you missed it, this weekend was insane!! The waves were clean and the weather was just as nice. Most of you have those bright red faces from being in the water all day Saturday and Sunday, that's what we like to see. Just wait, more waves to come...

Going Green

Nature's Shapes is doing its part in going green and helping the planet. We use as many eco-friendly products and processes as we can to give you the same quality product, just better for our environment.

All the EPS Epoxy boards come from recycled EPS foam and are able to be recycled again. The epoxy resin used to fiberglass the foam also has no voc's (volatile organic compounds aka fumes/smell). These fumes are emitted during the lamination process. This makes it safer for not only our workers, but you and the environment as well. So buy one, ride one and make the world a better place while you're doing it.

Warm Weather is Coming!

The ice and snow are starting to melt and the warm weather is coming. 60s on Friday?! I can't believe it either after the crazy winter we had. We did made sure to paddle out into the water to check out the ice before it melted (as you see above). It's official though, spring is on its way (i'm sure no ones complaining). Perfect time for you to get that new board or wetsuit for a vacation or ankle high surf here on the island.

We've been enjoying the end of the winter making custom boards and doing some awesome repair work. Be sure to call us if you need to fix any board in any condition. You won't even be able to tell there was a ding or a scratch, it'll look just like new.

Winter Blues...

So, it has been one long cold and flat winter so far ey? Pretty snowy, no waves, and now 12 degree days with another storm brewing? Wonderful. Well we've been keeping pretty busy over here at the Nature's Shapes factory, just recently got done with a large order of 11 boards which will be sent halfway around the globe to Indonesia... rather exciting. For those boards we used a new silk screening company that has the ability to take quality photographs, art and any other design you can think of and print it on a laminatable fabric that we can inlay onto your surfboard! Its the future of surfboard production! Want that pic of you getting barrelled on your board permanently? DONE

The rest are some other nice polished boards that have came and went through the factory in the past two or three weeks. 6'0" resin swirl with sublime art, beautiful 6'6" maroon Q82, and even a board that was used as a signing tablet at a Bar Mitzvah where all the kids signed the board then we glossed and polished it for a sealed finish... Great idea for a birthday or any other gift giving event!

Also, here are a few shots of a reconditioned 10'6" Hobie surfboard from the 1960's. The paint is original and the board is in near mint condition. Truly a special board probably work a pretty penny. The fin is removeable which was not common for that time, and the primitive paint job is an indication of the time period. We take much worse looking old boards than this and make them look brand new, so anyone looking to get Dad's old beater board in the garage fixed up for a wall or even to ride, call the shop for information!

The first minute or so is random windswells, following that is all the hurricanes that sent us great surf in chronological order. Surfer's Healing

So today some of the guys here at NS were fortunate enough to be part of the annual Surfer's Healing event held in Long Beach. It was quite an amazing event as hundreds of children and families came out in addition to a full crew of talented and humbling surfers who made the event possible. Nature's Shapes lent out quite a few SUP's which helped the event move quicker as there was more equipment for the children to use.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Surfer's Healing have a look at their website http://www.surfershealing.com/ each year hundreds of families with autistic children come down to the beach to give their son/daughter the opportunity to try surfing. Some of the kids love it while others are terrified, but at the end of the day so many children were given an experience that may of changed them for the better in one way or another. All in all, an amazing experience... Tomorrow (9/16) they are holding a camp in Montauk, if you ever have a free moment it is worth checking out.

So, the three year anniversary party was a great success last night! Everyone at NS thanks you guys for coming out, showing your support, and making it an awesome time. Keep posted for photos coming soon.

What we do have a picture of is some of the sweet shirts that we have in the shop designed by our artist Shauna. Check out a small sample of the colors we in the shot to the right.
Each of the designs comes in a variety of colors and the full range of sizes. My personal favorite happens to be the octopus wrapped around the Nature's logo. If you look close at the shot, you can see that in each of its tentacles there's a different model of NS board.

3 Year Anniversary

Alright so the date has been set... Saturday August 28th is the day that the 3 year anniversary party will take place! Bring your friends and family as this party is going to go late into the night. Free giveaways, food, beverages, music, and sales on nearly everything in the store will keep the crowd strong and energy high.

Party starts at 5pm, but feel free to come earlier as the shop will be open all day. Each year this party gets bigger and bigger so we fully expect a huge turnout this year. Summer Happenings...

Hope everyone is enjoying the start of this wonderful Summer! Hasn't been unbearably flat but some more waves couldn't hurt. We would like everybody to know that we will be throwing a huge party to celebrate our three year opening anniversary. We are in the planning stages and are looking at having it towards the end of July, so keep your eyes and ears open for an announcement about that. There will be live music, food, drinks, and sales on everything in the store! Every year the anniversary party gets bigger and better so be sure to find out the exact date ( which is still pending because we are waiting on the band to give us their availability) and be sure to stop down and share some stoke!!!

Couple of new boards moving through the shop lately, the crazy longboard is made of Kevlar and is the first of its kind that Mike has made. It is really cool to look at it closely and see the kevlar weave that was used to glass the board. The Pink board is an HP mini and is perfect for those small summer time waves that a normal shortboard just doesn't cut it on. Be sure to stop in and see the newly stocked showroom, as we have added ALOT of other new boards.

The last shot is of the "baby" whale that washed up on shore a few weeks ago at Jones Beach, had the opportunity to go check it out. It is amazing to see such a large animal up close like that and figured I would share.

Here it Comes!!!

Aside from good waves looming in our future, we also have another unbelievable quarry of new boards that have just "dropped in" to the shop. We have a beautiful board that yet again we have laid in some unbelievable graphics similar to last week's "galaxy" board. This one is a Japanese style print that runs the entire length of the board. We have a brand new 9'0 orange railed HP1, a 9'4"yellow noserider, 6'6" Single fin, that are just begging to be taken for a spin. Each have been glossed and buffed out to perfection; almost makes you not want to ride them.

With waves on their way and temperatures forecast to get into the 70's by the end of the week Spring very well has sprung! Come in and grab some last minute gear; some sales are still going on some select items. Many boards are still $50 - $100 off so if your in need of a last minute board I'm certain we have what you need.

The last board is an old Bunger board that we re-glossed and fixed up for a guy. Came out rather nice, good to see people aren't just hanging these vintage boards but are actually riding them too. Every board deserves a full life of water time.

With the Spring season officially here, we have new shapes that literally just came over from the factory. Our rocket model is super popular with several new prototypes of that on the rack including a parabolic one and some unbelievable "out of this world" artwork on a Q-82 for anyone who really wants to WOW their buds. In addition to all of these great new shortboards we have also added some longboards to the rack as well. These pictures are just a small taste of what we now have in the shop. Stop in and take a look around; we are here to help and answer your questions!!!

Hope everybody got in the water last week, as we had multiple days in a row of unreal waves! As we said last week, hopefully this is the end of our El Nino winter and the beginning of a wave-filled 2010 surfing season.

With Spring nearly upon us, the days are getting longer and the ocean seems to be waking up. Stop in and pick up what you need to get back in the water for the 2010 surfing season! We are fully stocked with spring suits and we have a brand new batch of boards which will be on the rack by the end of the week. Midwinter Flatness...

So this winter hasn't been too wave productive, but despite the flatness we keep pumping out some beautiful new boards. This El Nino winter should hopefully come to an end and bring us pumping Spring time surf. We are fully loaded with a quarry of new boards and even a new surfboard model called The "Ditch Digger". This new model is specifically designed for those mellow Ditch waves, a super thick shape that is bound to have you catching every wave. In addition to that we have been experimenting with a wide-tailed rocket-type board that has been the recent craze sweeping the island. With an overall wider template this board is perfect for the majority of waves we receive here on Long Island.

E-glide

We're proud and excited to announce that the shop is now carrying E-Glide skateboards. It's been a while since we've carried electric boards, and after a lot of requests and research, we found E-Glide. They're made here in the U.S.A and the decks are name brand: Dewey Weber, Sector 9, and Madrid.

We've test drove them and these boards are amazing. Because of the European electronics and the direct cable connection between throttle and board, these boards are better built and more responsive than the first generation boards we carried a few years back. They're great too because E-Glides are designed for easy part replacement, and customers can self service their powerboards. In shipping, one of our boards got damaged and E-glide was quick to send out new parts resulting in an easy fix.

Playing right now in the shop is a new DVD called Sound of Waves by the guys from Monumental films. The whole crew had gone to the premier party out in Sag Harbor back in September and it's an awesome movie.

It features an all-star lineup of pros including our team rider Damien Wills and local Chris Tomlin, sweet footage from around the world and a soundtrack that will keep you jamming.

Oh i forgot to mention... not only does it showcase our boy Damien, but... drum roll please... a whole section featuring the Nature's Shapes showroom and Mike shaping a board from start to finish. It's cool to see the shop from when it first opened up and gives you insight into how much of an art form hand-shaping a board truly is.

Despite all that it's worth watching just for the sake of seeing all the footage from South America. It's mind blowing how beautiful the waves and the scenery is.

Be sure to check it out, it's definitley a must see film and we have copies for sale in the showroom.

It's that time of year again, where we all channel our inner Billy Madison and start getting ready for the fall. The days are getting shorter, nights are getting colder. The beach is getting less crowded!

It's being predicted that there will be epic waves coming our way on Sunday and early into the week courtesy of Hurricane Bill. In preparation for the big storm we have a nice selection of mini guns in the showroom, along with a lot of other new boards that came in from the factory a few days ago. We also have a wide array of leashes, from 6 ft. comps to 10 ft. knees!

Spring has sprung and Nature's Shapes is fully stocked with all your springtime surfing needs. We have 3/2's, and 4/3's in Ripcurl, Hyperflex and West along with a variety of gloves and boots in all sizes. There are several new boards on the racks as well so come on in and check it out. Here are some pictures of recent boards that have come through the shop lately...
The first is a 1960's Hansen restoration, believe it or not under all that hardwork is the actual board that was crafted almost 50 years ago.
The next board is a 10'6 custom stand up paddleboard which is perfect for using in the ocean or on flat bays.
The red 6'2" short board is our Q-82 model which is great for the waves we get around here on Long Island. It has a quad set up which gives you more speed and drive.

The First board is a restoration project of an old Natural Art pintail. The next picture is of a board that was copied exactly due to the unrestorable nature of the original 1960's Hawk surfboard. Some artwork was added to the copied board but overall a beautiful piece of work. And the pink one is a custom 9'0".

This is a board that went along with 3 other boards painted by famous artists. This Board was painted by Avon Morisse. We auctioned these boards off at the surf lodge with Paddlers For Humanity and raised 40,000 dollars for charity. One of the standups went for 30,000.

These are some boards we have recently shaped and are available in the shop. The red is a 7'0" NS Hybrid, The blue swirl is a 6'0" Retro Fish, and the last is a 10'6" Stand up Paddle board. Stop in and check out the rest of the boards or have a custom board made to your exact liking...
